I know constraint might sound like a super restrictive concept, but it's one of the most freeing principles you can apply to your health – especially when applied to eating. Constraint is all about building boundaries within which we can thrive and become the best versions of ourselves.
Since constraint is a circumstance, we get to decide how we want to think about it. I see constraint as bringing me peace from decision-fatigue. I don't have to constantly think about what I'm eating, what I'm going to eat, how it fits into my weight loss goals, etc. – because I only eat what I've already committed to for the day. (More on this back in episode eight!)
Constraint can also simplify grocery shopping and meal planning for the entire family. Rather than cooking a different meal every single night, it allows us to focus on fueling our bodies with healthy foods, not entertaining ourselves with new dishes. Constraint also keeps us from eating emotionally when we don't “feel like” eating what we've already planned.
This is the tool that will keep your food boring and your life exciting – trust me, it's a much better way to spend your time and brainpower!

Super helpful episode. Grew up with a Mom who made the same thing every week. Drove me crazy. Now I see why. While I am on call and family is off for Spring Break today I have tasked them with assembling a list of our “do overs” yummy dinners that we have made that we intend to make again. But usually forget! I am afraid I will get bored, also hugely prone to the “I dont feel like eating that” treatment of planned ahead meals. Time to honor my commitment to myself!
Totally. Boring food is good. Find excitement somewhere else in your life. I used to think the same thing every week was one of the worst things I could think of. Now I think it’s brilliant! I love how you’re getting the family involved. This is the kind of massive action that yields the results you want!!
❤️
<3 you too!!!
Just listened to this episode! I’ve made a little headway in developing a repertoire of 10-15 meals that most of the family members will eat – but trying to cater to my kids palate has resulted in not the healthiest of meals. I would love suggestions for healthy meals that are kid-friendly.
Thank you!
Hi Arika! Listen to the podcast that just came out today – episode 21! All your questions will be answered. 😀
Any tips on bringing constraint to that “after the kids are in bed” sweet treat that my husband and I have? It is usually a time we have a chocolate treat and actually are able to talk to each other without kids running around everywhere. We tend to limit it, but I am wondering if it is hindering my weight loss as I am stuck at a plateau that I can’t seem to break through.
Just started listening to your podcast and just love your clearly presented points, your relatable content and soothing voice! This episode in particular really spoke to me. I too have thought, “I am a terrific cook, cooking is my hobby, I like spending a big chunk of my weekend menu planning and shopping, etc.” My boyfriend even keeps an excel spreadsheet of all the great dishes we’ve made together with links to the recipes which reminds me of a slightly higher tech version of the binder you talked about! I will admit that my brain is going to have to really digest the concept of constraining the menu but I think thanks in part to your wonderful podcast I am ready to simplify, find excitement elsewhere, and make it easier to adhere to my hunger scale. Thank you and keep up the great work!
Hi Katrina, do you mind sharing the name of the fancy bean company you use? Thank you!
